The Best Boutique Hotels in Lisbon, Portugal

The 12 Best Boutique Hotels in Lisbon

Home to clandestine cobblestone passageways, alluring ancient ruins, and an enticing food scene, Lisbon has been carefully crafting its charm for centuries. Portugal’s capital city is one of the most vibrant and captivating destinations in Europe, where you can spend your time admiring local artwork and exploring hidden alleyways during the day, before dining on freshly caught seafood and experiencing the city’s high-octane nightlife in the evenings.

Lisbon is one of Europe’s oldest cities, with historical records dating all the way back to 205 BC. No visit to Portugal is complete without visiting its top historical sites, including the Castelo de São Jorge, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, and Torre de Belém. And for a taste of Lisbon’s modern side, you can peruse works of art at the Berardo Collection Museum, dine alfresco in the trendy Bairro Alto, and get up close with sharks and penguins at the Lisbon Oceanarium.

It’s no surprise that Lisbon is brimming with fantastic accommodation options, from incredible castle-like residences where you can feel like royalty to ultra-modern minimalist hotels that look like something from the future.

In fact, there are so many cool hotels that you might find it almost impossible to settle on just one. To help make your decision a little bit easier, we’ve put together a list of the 12 best boutique hotels in Lisbon!

Where to Stay in Lisbon

Where to Stay in Lisbon: Best Hotels

Can’t decide where to stay in Lisbon? We can help you with that! Whether you’ve never been to the city before or you’ve been 100 times and you’re looking for something a bit different, here are the best areas to stay in Lisbon.

If you’re new to the city, we recommend staying in Chiado. Here you’ll find all the things you could ever want while on vacation.

The neighborhood is within walking distance of all the city’s major attractions, as well as tons of cafes, bars, restaurants, and shops. It’s also got great public transport connections through the Metro, buses, and a tram.

Baixa is another great place to stay if you’re unfamiliar with the city. This area forms the lower half of Chiado and has a distinctly touristy feel. The location, just steps away from everything you’ll want to see, is great – but it can get a little noisy along the main streets. However, if you can snap up a soundproofed room (check our suggestions), you won’t have any issues.

El Bairro Alto is the neighborhood to choose if you want to spend your days peacefully sightseeing and your nights loudly partying. Located above Chiado, the area is home to small quirky shops, cafes selling locally produced wine, a couple of interesting museums, and some fascinating street art. It’s also where you’ll discover some of the best bars and nightclubs in Lisbon.

Hi! Just a note- I think the booking.com link to Torel Palace goes to the location in Porto and not in Lisbon. I was confused and then researched– but I think I actually DO want to visit the Porto location, so the mixup helped me! Ha ha! Thanks for all your helpful columns!
