INFORMATION FROM THE HAVASUPAI FACEBOOK PAGE: There are no new reservations available in 2023. We know in years past that February 1 is the date to get the current year’s permits — that is not the case for 2023. The only way to go in 2023 is to purchase off the transfer list. Reservations for 2024 are not available until February 2024.
If you are planning a trip to Havasu Falls this year, you are probably beginning to think about what you’ll need to pack for your upcoming adventure. We created a comprehensive packing list to help you plan but wanted to spend more time on the two most important items that you’ll need to bring – your hiking shoes and your trekking backpack.
The reason that these two items are of particular importance is that you’ll need to walk 10 miles each way from the parking lot to the campground while carrying all of your camping essentials (there are other ways to get to the village as well, read all about it here!). So you’ll want to make sure you have comfortable but durable hiking shoes or boots that won’t let you down, and a padded pack that will hold everything you’ll need.

The 8 Best Hiking Shoes and Boots for Havasu Falls
Havasu Falls: Should you Trek in Hiking Boots? Or Shoes?
The biggest difference between hiking boots and hiking shoes is that hiking boots will provide your ankles with more stability and support. However, that additional support generally adds weight to the boot. And the more enclosed your foot is, the hotter the temperature inside of your boot. Which you may find challenging if you are hiking through the canyon to Havasu Falls in the middle of the day.
I have strong ankles and don’t need the support, you’re probably better off choosing a pair of hiking shoes that have good traction, some waterproofing, and breathability to keep your feet cool. You’ll appreciate having a lighter shoe for your long trek.
But if your ankles do require additional stability, the trail to Havasu Falls is quite rocky and the descent into the canyon is a steady downhill climb. You’ll want to invest in a pair of hiking boots that have good support, good traction, and also don’t lack in comfort. It’s not a bad idea to pack hiking poles as well for added support.
