You’ve probably heard of Brazil’s world-famous carnival. But did you know Corfu throws its own sensational carnival between February and March? As Corfu was conquered by the Venetians in the 13th century, Corfu’s celebrations are very similar to what you’ll find in Venice’s theatrical carnival.
The exact dates change each year depending on when Easter falls, but the events remain mostly the same. Throughout late winter and early spring, you’ll see locals all over the island dressed up in extravagant masks and traditional Venetian finery. Dramatic parades fill the streets while huge parties with lavish feasts are held throughout the island.
At the end of the carnival, the Grand Parade takes place. The final float in the parade is dedicated to the King of Carnival and is believed to be the physical manifestation of all the locals’ sins.
To make a fresh start, the grand float is burned as part of a giant bonfire. After that, a huge street party takes place!

Naoussa in Fira, Santorini, serves up one of the best moussakas we’ve ever had. It’s packed full of flavor, and you get to enjoy it surrounded by stunning sea views. If you don’t see it on the menu, ask the staff. The moussaka is made fresh, and it’s not always on the menu because it often sells out quickly.
Strofi Restaurant in Athens is another excellent place for the classic dish. The portion is absolutely huge and the topping is perfectly broiled until it’s golden brown and crisp. Each moussaka is served individually, and one is usually enough to share between two people.
17. Live the pirate life on Shipwreck Bay in Zakynthos
If you’ve ever looked at Greek beaches online, it’s almost certain you’ve stumbled upon Shipwreck Bay in Zakynthos. Also known as Navagio Bay, this iconic beach is one of the most photographed in all of Greece.
You’ll find Shipwreck Bay on the western side of Zakynthos, close to Anafotiria village. It got its name in 1983 when a boat smuggling cigarettes washed up on its shores. The boat is still there to this day and gives the beach a real deserted island vibe.
The beach’s location is absolutely stunning. It features a small area of soft blonde sand gently lapped by water that changes from pale turquoise to deep cobalt blue. The sand and the shallow parts of the ocean are surrounded by towering cliffs that will make you feel tiny.
Because of its remote location, the only way to get to Shipwreck Bay is to take a water taxi from Porto Vromi. Water taxis leave every hour and the journey takes around 30 minutes. There are no facilities on the beach, so make sure you take everything you’ll need with you for the day.
18. Trek through the Samaria Gorge in Crete
One of the best things to do in Greece for nature lovers is hidden away on the island of Crete. In the southwest region of the island in Chania, you’ll discover the Samaria Gorge National Park. It’s a huge park that covers 5,100 hectares, where around 3,000 people go hiking each day in the summer.
The Samaria Gorge is the biggest in Europe, forming part of an extensive hiking trail that begins in Andalusia, Spain, and ends in Cyprus. The part of the gorge you can hike along in Crete is 10 miles long.
Don’t worry if that’s too far for you. There are several smaller trails within the main hike you can tackle for something a little less challenging. The gorge is a roomy 495 feet wide at its widest point and a mere 10 feet wide at its narrowest point.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Samaria Gorge is home to around 450 species of animals and plants, many of which are native to Crete. The Cretan wildcat, Cretan badger, Cretan wild goat, and Blasius’ horseshoe bat are just some of the animals you’ll get to see on your trek.

All the ingredients are sourced locally from Greece, and each plate is topped with a huge wedge of feta cheese. It’s shockingly cheap and comes with a generous side of freshly-baked bread perfect for soaking up every last drizzle of olive oil.
20. See Greek tragedies performed as they were intended
Visit Epidaurus in Peloponnese for one of the top things to do in Greece. Here you can sit in a millennia-old amphitheater and witness the classics of Greek drama unfold before your very eyes – just like they did in ancient times.
The Athens Epidaurus Festival takes place every year between July and mid-August. During these weeks, performances are held every Friday and Saturday evening at Epidaurus. If you visit at this time of year, you’ll have the chance to see all the best Greek tragedies as they were originally intended.
The acoustics are incredible, and you can hear every word perfectly, even if you’re sitting all the way in the back. You may struggle to see from the top seats, so buy your tickets early to make sure you get a good spot.
Even if you visit outside the festival dates, Epidaurus is still worth checking out. The UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 4th century BCE. It’s remarkably well-preserved and can hold up to 14,000 people.
21. Stroll through Rhodes Town
Rhodes Town on the island of Rhodes is one of the best places in Greece to enjoy a relaxed, carefree stroll. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is almost entirely car-free – only local residents are allowed to drive through its streets.
Rhodes Town is encircled by an imposing fortification system made up of impressive gates and enormous towers that the Knights of St. John constructed after they conquered Rhodes in the 14th century.
