62 Travel Tips for Your First Trip Abroad

I’d like to say that I sort of know what I’m talking about now that I’ve been to 50-ish countries. So hopefully I can impart some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way so that as a first-time traveler you can avoid them.

Check out my list of 62 tips for first-time travelers

Check your money situation

Does your bank charge international fees? What are the ATM fees? What's the exchange rate? When in doubt, bring cash.

Check your passport

Is it valid for at least another 6 months? Does the country you're visiting offer a visa-on-arrival or do you need to pre-arrange?

Not sure whether or not to pack something? Don’t.

You can always buy things that you need or forgot. The lighter your bag, the better.

Check the weather

It may be 90 degrees during the day and drop to 50 at night so you should be prepared for both. And a light rain jacket is never a bad idea.
