Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Neighborhoods & Hotels

Where to Stay in Bangkok: The Best Neighborhoods & Hotels

If the country of Thailand is on your bucket list, you’ll almost certainly start your trip in the capital city of Bangkok. In fact, many people consider Bangkok to be the gateway to Southeast Asia. A massive, sprawling metropolis of over 9 million people, Bangkok is both the financial and cultural hub of Thailand and worth spending at least a few days exploring.

While Bangkok doesn’t have the lush rice paddies of the north or the white sandy beaches of the south, it does have dozens of Michelin-starred restaurants, rooftop bars with incredible views, world-class nightclubs, and plenty of temples, night markets, and delicious food stalls to keep you entertained for weeks (or even years).

Bangkok also has some of the best hotels in Thailand – from opulent 5-star resorts to cozy boutique hotels, you’ll have so many to choose from during your stay. But due to the city’s size, one of the most important and most difficult decisions you’ll make is where to stay in Bangkok.

After researching hotels during several trips to Thailand over the last decade, we have put together our list of the best hotels and resorts in Bangkok divided by neighborhood to help you plan your trip to Asia’s City of Angels!

The Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Bangkok

Where to Stay in Bangkok: Neighborhood Map

Your first question when deciding where to stay in Bangkok should be “in which neighborhood do I want to be based?” Bangkok is a huge city with notoriously bad traffic so location is key and each neighborhood has its own pros and cons.

Some neighborhoods like Banglamphu and Chinatown will put you within walking distance of top tourist sites like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. The Siam neighborhood is more centrally located and will be perfect if your top priority in Bangkok is shopping. And if swanky dining and rooftop bars are your thing then it’s better to base yourself in Silom or Sukhumvit.

To make it easy for you to decide where to stay in Bangkok, we have provided an overview of each of our favorite Bangkok neighborhoods and listed our top hotel recommendations.

Or if you already know what Bangkok neighborhood you want to stay in then just click on one of the links below to jump straight to it!

Bangkok’s Best Hotels by Neighborhood

Banglamphu

Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Neighborhoods & Hotels - Banglamphu

If this is your first trip to Bangkok then you’ll probably want to stay in Banglamphu. This neighborhood encompasses most of the top tourist sites in Bangkok, including The Grand Palace and The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Pho, Wat Saket (The Golden Mount), and the notorious backpacker party area, Khao San Road.

The downside to staying in Banglamphu is that it is the most touristy area in Bangkok. Banglamphu is also not accessible via the Skytrain or the Bangkok Metro so you’ll be forced to use lots of taxis or Grab cars. Bangkok has arguably the worst traffic in the world so it can take a long time to get places around rush hour.

Banglamphu is also very far from Suvarnabhumi Airport so if you’re only in Bangkok for 1-2 nights, you’ll wind up spending a big chunk of your time just getting from the airport to your hotel and back again. But if you want to see the main tourist attractions and spend a night partying on Khao San Road then Banglamphu is the best Bangkok neighborhood for you!

Casa Vimaya Riverside

The Best Hotels and Resorts in Bangkok, Thailand: Casa Vimaya Riverside

Casa Vimaya Riverside is absolutely our favorite hotel to stay at whenever we visit Bangkok! The property itself is beautiful, peaceful, and serene with an ideal setting right next to the river. You would never realize that you’re just a short walk from the crazy backpacker area of Khao San Road. It also makes the location super central to tourist attractions like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho.

Rooms are quite spacious and elegant, especially for the moderate price. The decor is simple, classic, and clean with incredibly comfortable beds and large bathrooms. Amenities include a seating area, a flat-screen television set, and plenty of complimentary toiletries.

You’ll love enjoying a relaxing breakfast in the open-air restaurant that sits right on the river. The views are beautiful and it’ll make you forget that you’re in a huge, noisy city. And the rooftop pool is a highlight of the hotel. You can grab a refreshing cocktail from the rooftop bar and lounge in the pool while gazing out over the city. It’s the perfect place to spend a hot Bangkok afternoon.

Chillax Resort

The Best Hotels and Resorts in Bangkok, Thailand: Chillax Resort

Chillax Resort is located just around the corner from Casa Vimaya and within walking distance of Khao San Road. In fact, you can see the rooftop pool of the Casa Vimaya from the rooftop pool at Chillax Resort! The difference is that a younger crowd tends to prefer Chillax. As such, you’ll find more of a party scene at the pool bar in the afternoon and evening.

You’ll find that the other Bangkok hotels and resorts on this list are more classic and elegant than Chillax and if you stay here, you can expect the furniture to be a bit gaudy. But choose to book this hotel if you’re looking for a hotel with a younger vibe in a fantastic location. Chillax is at the end of a dead-end street that has plenty of delectable (and cheap!) restaurant options.

Rooms at Chillax come with a relaxing jacuzzi bathtub, a television set, a private balcony, a minibar, and toiletries. The real draw of the hotel is the amazing rooftop pool with a lively bar. Also the proximity to the main tourist attractions in Bangkok. You’re sure to make a few new friends at this hotel!

The major draw to the Inn a Day is the perfect location and the view of Wat Arun from across the river. Chinatown / Yaowarat

Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Neighborhoods & Hotels - Chinatown

Chinatown is a super fun neighborhood to stay in while in Bangkok. The streets of Chinatown come alive at night with flashing neon signs and endless options for street food. This neighborhood is also very close to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and several other top Bangkok attractions, but it is a little more centrally located and less touristy than Banglamphu.

Unfortunately, Chinatown also suffers from no access to Bangkok’s Skytrain and limited Metro stops. But if you’re mainly interested in exploring Bangkok’s amazing street food scene then Chinatown is definitely the best neighborhood for you.

Yaowarat Road is the main thoroughfare that runs through Bangkok’s Chinatown so you’ll find the entire neighborhood is sometimes referred to as ” Yaowarat”.

Siam

Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Neighborhoods & Hotels - Siam

Bangkok’s Siam neighborhood is probably the most central place to stay in the city. You’ll still be close enough to the sites in Banglamphu and just a short Grab ride away from the street food mecca of Chinatown. The Jim Thompson House Museum is also located in Siam and is one of the more popular things to do in Bangkok.

Siam is probably best known for the plethora of giant shopping malls, including MBK, centralwOrld, Siam Discovery, Siam Center, and the luxurious Siam Paragon. As strange as it sounds, we love exploring the megamalls of Siam and it’s a great way to beat the heat in Bangkok. And if you’re planning on doing a lot of shopping, Siam is definitely the best Bangkok neighborhood for you!

Siam is serviced by the Skytrain which can be a real-life saver if you’re trying to get somewhere during rush hour. You can also use the Skytrain to travel all the way to Suvarnabhumi Airport which is typically faster than traveling by car.

Where to Stay in Bangkok’s Siam Neighborhood

Silom

Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Neighborhoods & Hotels - Silom

Silom is Bangkok’s business district and is another awesome neighborhood to explore! The best thing about Silom is its close proximity to Lumphini Park. This 142-acre park is by far Bangkok’s largest green space and is the perfect place to escape the madness of the city. The park offers 1.5 miles of paths for strolling or jogging, a man-made lake with paddleboats for rent, and ample shade and benches for people watching.

The Neilson Hays Library is another great place to escape the heat and chaos of Bangkok. First established in 1869, this library has over 20,000 books (including many in English), two art galleries, and a lovely little cafe where you could easily spend an afternoon.

Silom is full of upscale bars and restaurants, the most famous of which is Sky Bar on the 63rd floor of the Lebua State Tower. SkyBar is probably the most iconic rooftop bar in Bangkok because it was featured in the movie The Hangover Part II. Unfortunately, Sky Bar has become a bit too popular. These days you’re probably better off heading to one of the city’s other rooftop bars – we prefer Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar in Sathorn.

You’ll also find the notorious Patpong Night Market in Silom. Full of cheap knockoff goods and dodgy go-go bars, Patpong has long been one of Bangkok’s infamous red-light districts. Luckily, the area is starting to shake off some of it’s more unsavory elements, and new, hip boutique shops are beginning to move into the night market.

Silom is well-serviced by both the Skytrain and the Metro which makes getting around during Bangkok’s rush hour much easier. It also borders the Chao Phraya River which means you can take the water bus upriver to Banglamphu if you want to visit The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun.

Large windows in both the bedroom and the bathroom offer fantastic city views. The large soaking tub is a great place to relax after a day spent exploring Bangkok. And you’ll have every amenity that you could ever need available to you.

The gorgeous infinity pool is arguably one of the best in Bangkok! You won’t believe just how picturesque it is in person. The hotel also offers a beautiful rooftop bar, plenty of restaurant options, a fitness center, and super attentive staff. It’s definitely THE place to stay in Bangkok if you’re looking for a little luxury!

The Best Hotels and Resorts in Bangkok, Thailand: The Peninsula Bangkok

If you’re looking for a relaxing home away from home during your trip to Bangkok, look no further than The Peninsula Bangkok. Perfectly situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, The Peninsula is Old Hollywood glamour meets SE Asian hospitality.

And while the Peninsula Hotel is technically on the wrong side of the river to truly be in the Silom neighborhood, they offer a free river shuttle all day long and as frequently as you need it. The hotel is also conveniently right across the river from a Skytrain station. You’ll be able to easily navigate the city while avoiding traffic.

You’ll love the views of the river from the terrace where the daily breakfast is served and from the relaxing pool area. It’ll be nearly impossible to drag yourself from the hotel to go exploring!

Sathorn

Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Neighborhoods & Hotels - Sathorn

The neighborhood of Sathorn also considered part of Bangkok’s Financial District, sits just south of Silom. It shares much of the same character as Silom but is a little less touristy which is part of its appeal. The Skytrain runs along the boundary of Silom and Sathorn so you’ll have public transportation as an option in this neighborhood, and just like Silom, you’ll be able to walk to Lumphini park if you need a respite from the concrete jungle of Bangkok.

Sathorn is home to many great bars and restaurants but two really stand out. The first is the Blue Elephant on Sathorn Road which is one of Bangkok’s best restaurants and also one of the city’s most popular cooking schools. The second is Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar, on top of the Banyan Tree Hotel. With unmatched views of Bangkok’s skyline, Vertigo is one of the best places to grab a drink in Bangkok!

Another landmark of Sathorn is the Sathorn Unique building – also called the “Ghost Tower”. This 46-story-tall skyscraper was supposed to house luxury condominiums, but, due to the 1997 financial crisis in Asia, it was never completed. The building is technically condemned and off-limits to the public, but many thrill-seekers and photographers have managed to sneak their way up to the top. In fact, some people consider it a must-do in Bangkok.

Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn

The Best Hotels and Resorts in Bangkok, Thailand: Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn

As mentioned, Bangkok traffic is pretty terrible, no matter what time of day. So you’ll have a much easier time getting around if you pick a hotel that is near the attractions that you’d like to visit, or that’s near a convenient form of transportation. The Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn is connected to the BTS Skytrain via its very own sky bridge! Which will make navigating the city during rush hour a breeze!

Rooms at the Easton Grand have light, breezy colors and modern decor. All are equipped with air-conditioning, coffee-making facilities, a flat-screen satellite television set, a fully stocked minibar, and plenty of complimentary toiletries so you won’t need a thing during your stay. The rooms are quite large with a lot of natural light and you’ll love the spectacular bathroom!

The outdoor infinity pool on the 14th floor is a highlight of the hotel. Not only is the pool area absolutely stunning, but you’ll also enjoy beautiful city views. The fitness center is well-equipped if you want to get some exercise during your visit. You’ll be treated like royalty by the amazing staff at the Eastin Grand and you may never want to go back home!

Sukhumvit

Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Neighborhoods & Hotels - Sukhumvit

Sukhumvit is an incredibly large neighborhood, and, fortunately, the Skytrain running along Sukhumvit Road makes exploring it more manageable. Octave Rooftop Lounge and Bar on top of the Marriott Hotel is one of the best rooftop bars in Bangkok, and you’ll also find 10 Michelin-starred restaurants in Sukhumvit, including 2 two-starred restaurants – R-Haan and Sorn.

Just north of Sukhumvit, Royal City Avenue (commonly referred to as just RCA) is a massive clubbing complex that has been designated as an official “nightlife zone”. There you’ll find several massive clubs that throw parties seven days a week. We have personally had a few late nights at Route 66.

Sukhumvit is also home to two of Bangkok’s seediest red-light areas that are packed with go-go bars of ill-repute and questionable characters – Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza. Luckily, both are easily avoided and you probably won’t even realize they are there unless you specifically seek them out.

Sukhumvit offers a little of everything – street food, fine dining, shopping, rooftop bars, and nightclubs. The only downside is that it’s quite far from the site of Banglamphu. But, if you’ve already seen Bangkok’s main tourist site, then Sukhumvit is an awesome neighborhood to stay in.

Where to Stay in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Neighborhood

Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit

The Best Hotels and Resorts in Bangkok, Thailand: Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit

You know that you’ll receive impeccable service at every Sheraton hotel around the world and the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit may even exceed your expectations! Beds are unbelievably comfortable with silky smooth 300-thread-count sheets and fluffy pillows. You’ll enjoy a welcome fruit basket upon your arrival and you can raid the fully stocked minibar in the late evenings. Bathrooms are huge and have every amenity you could wish for.

The beautiful outdoor pool is a highlight of the Sheraton Grande. It is surrounded by beautiful greenery so you’ll feel like you’re in the middle of a jungle rather than a huge city. You can take advantage of the state-of-the-art gym, complete with personal trainers and a sauna, or the spa where you can pamper yourself. And the Sunday Jazzy Brunch is not-to-be-missed!
